Probable Maximum Loss (PML) Study
The Probable Maximum Loss (PML) Study is an assessment of the vulnerability of a building, structure, or facility. The purpose of the work is to quantify the existing “as-is” risk by estimating the Probable Maximum Damage (or Probable Maximum Loss) to the identified building, equipment, and contents, and the likely duration of business interruption. The purpose is also to identify major deficiencies which, if eliminated, would likely provide the greatest reduction in risk at the evaluated location(s).
Information from this scope will be useful for risk mitigation, insurance, and long-range facility planning. Given the level of risk and the degree to which it might be mitigated, decisions concerning appropriate building strengthening, equipment bracing, and insurance levels can be made, with huge potential savings.
